Tchaikovsky – Melodious Inventor
Coca-Cola Arena

Mischa Maisky is considered to be one of the most important cellists of our time. Playing on an instrument by famous Venetian luthier Domenico Montagna, he has shown his dedication to the works of Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, on several occasions. The Variations on a Rococo Theme show influences by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart whom Tchaikovsky deeply admired. The Nocturne for cello and orchestra is a beautiful example of Tchaikovsky's melodious invention. Sergey Smbatyan, a renowned expert in the Russian repertoire, set up a dialogue between these works, the sumptuous harmonies, endless melodic lines and magnificent colours of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 and Rih by the young Maltese composer Alex Vella Gregory.

 - “I enjoyed the performance very much. It’s a very nice hall, and the audience here in Dubai were really wonderful. I was surprised by the hall actually because I didn’t expect it to be so good seeing as it’s not a traditional concert hall, but it was very good. The orchestra were really great as well, I enjoyed collaborating with them, they have real passion for the music, and the maestro Sergey Smbatyan was a real pleasure to work with. I was very happy to finally have the chance to play with him and I hope that we will have more occasions to collaborate together in the future. Organisationally, everything has been wonderful as well. Very busy of course, but I’ve been well taken care of.”

Sergey Smbatyan
 - “It was very special to collaborate with Mischa Maisky. He is a true legend of the classical music world and it was wonderful to rehearse and perform with him. This evening was also especially pleasurable for me because I got to conduct the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra here in Dubai once again and we had the opportunity to present some of the musical heritage of the Maltese islands and it’s always nice to share the music of Malta with new audiences”

Fascinating Insights of the Great German Masters
Coca-Cola Arena

Johannes Brahms used a theme he attributed to Joseph Haydn to show his own mastery of form and give himself the opportunity to experiment with symphonic structures. Inspiration is also essential to Alexey Shor's music. His Concerto for violin and orchestra Phantasms is a spectacular, melodious bravura piece that proves why Shor's compositions are appreciated by top orchestras and famous soloists like Stella Chan who plays the violin in this concert. The four-note opening motif of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No 5 is, without any doubt, known all over the world even by those who do not particularly like classical music. Listening to Mahler's adjustments of Beethoven's symphony provides fascinating insights into the performance practice of Mahler's time and is a truly rewarding experience.
